Triathlon wetsuits provide advantages over regular swim suits.

Triathlon wetsuits are designed to be taken off quickly when triathletes are rushing from their transition from swimming to cycling. While you can continue in your swim suit to the cycling and running events, you are not going to want to keep you wetsuit on.

 

Many triathletes who win the Ironman don’t wear them

Why wear a wetsuit at all during your next Ironman? Three reasons:


• Wetsuits will keep you warm during the swim event.
• Wetsuits can reduce your drag through the water.
• Wetsuits can give you a little more buoyancy which will help keep you safer.

There are many wetsuit manufacturers out there that have triathlon versions of wetsuits which are designed for easy removal. Triathlete Magazine reviewed a number of them back in their August 2002 edition. Major wetsuit companies include ProMotion, Orca, QR, Aquaman, Piel, and Ironman. Wetsuits like these range from $239 to $450 a pop.

But if you don’t like the way they make you feel in the water, as long as you’re not swimming in really cold water, you don’t have to wear them. You won’t be alone. There are plenty of iron men and women out there who chose not to wear them as well.

And for the shorter triathlons where transition time can really impact your placement, triathletes should really consider swimming without the wetsuit to cut down the time to take them off. If you must wear a wetsuit, you can get a body lubricant that will help you take your wetsuit off in a hurry. Bodyglide or Sportstick are safe to use. Stay away from petroleum products like Vaseline; they aren’t good for the wetsuit material.
