Triathlon bikes fill niche market
Triathlon bikes fit a niche market in that they really have been designed
with the triathlete in mind. Instead of building a bike that could work for all
athletes, designers work on making the perfect bike for somebody about to
compete in an Ironman.
You’ll find the differences in the following areas:
1) bike wheel size
2) bike wheel construction
3) seat post
Ironman competitors look for specialized bikes to help them shave off their
time
Most bikes built specifically for a triathlon
will have smaller wheels. A regular sized wheel might be 27 inches. Triathlon
bicycles will often have wheels as small as 24 inches.
Another crucial area where a bicycle built for triathlons differs from other
models is the wheel construction. Instead of the regular spokes or a reduced
spoke design, triathlon cycles will usually have a
composite wheel spoke design. This design can save you up to 4 minutes in a 112
mile race by cutting down the wind drag.
Finally the third area where a bike built for triathlon will differ from other
racing bikes is how the seat post is positioned. The seat post can have a
steeper angle which pushes the rider into a “running” position on the bike.
If you’re going to spend the money on a bike built especially for triathlons,
make sure you get an aerodynamic helmet as well as look into the right
shoe/pedals combination for you.
