Swim Suits May Not Be Enough
Swim suits may not be enough for you when you’re in Triathlons. Hypothermia
for swimmers is a big concern when you’re in the water for upwards of 2 hours. Luckily, most triathlons will accept the use of a wet suit during the swimming component. There are a few triathlons that require contestants to wear a wet suit.
Wet Suit Might Be the Ticket for the Triathlon
The most important reason to get a wet suit is that it will help to keep you warm while you swim
in a triathlon. A wet suit can also help you stay buoyant
when swimming.
There are three basic styles of wet suits for triathletes: a short john, long john, and a full suit. The short john cuts off above the knees and is armless. A long john goes down to your ankles and is armless. The full john covers both your arms and legs. Which one to get depends on how cold the water is where you’ll be
swimming triathlons. Check with the suit manufacturer
like Speedo, Orca or Nike; they usually rate their wetsuits with a temperature range that they’re good for.
If you’re in especially cold water, consider upgrading your regular latex cap with a neoprene one to help keep the heat in.
During the swim race, there will be people waiting for you when you finish the swim part to help you take off your wet suit. Don’t forget to slather on the sun screen lotion before you take off
for the rest of your tri.
