Swim Strokes Should Be Long
Many triathletes confuse power with effectiveness. Case in point: swim
strokes. When you compare a triathlete’s form with that of an Olympic swimmer,
you’ll see that the triathlete will often look like a fish out of water. The
Olympic swimmer will swim through the water like a dolphin. What’s going on? The
Olympic swimmer has learned to reduce his or her body’s drag through the water
by shaping their body and perfecting their swim technique.
Triathlon training should focus on swim technique
One area of technique that you can work on during your
triathlon training is the length of your
swim stroke. Basically, the longer you can make your stroke, the more efficient
you will become. That’s because every stroke actually costs you in terms of
efficiency.
Find a swim coach who can help evaluate your current stroke technique. They can
come up with a customized training plan that includes specific swim drills for
you. Even without a coach you can count how many strokes it takes you to finish
a lap and then contentiously focus on your stroke length to reduce your stroke
count to get across the pool.
Why not get your triathlon off to a good shot? Instead of finishing your
swimming event with a sense that you did just okay,
think about how you’d feel going into your bike event if you felt you just
nailed your swim event?
