Swim lessons will improve your swim time
Swim lessons? Why do I need that? I know how to swim. Does that sound like
you? But is your swim time your personal best? Learn the benefits of having
personal swimming lessons as part of your
triathlon training.
Because we swim in water, when we have poor technique, we can’t often feel it or
see it. There aren’t mirrors to help us focus on posture the way weigh lifting
rooms often provide. We often don’t have the sore muscles or injuries that you
might get when you use poor technique with running or cycling.
Triathlon training should include more than just endurance training
As we train for triathlons, we often focus on endurance. Putting in the miles
to get our bodies accustomed to long distances. We spend top dollar getting the
most aerodynamic bike there is out there to shave off a minute of our bike time.
But what we don’t consider is that in the swim event, our bodies are our bikes,
so to speak. So what’s up with your aerodynamics?
You can’t ascertain your swimming technique by yourself. You at least need
somebody to video tape you. But more than that, you’ve got to be humble enough
to admit that somewhere out there is a coach who knows more about
swimming that you do. Find that coach. Have him or
her watch you swim and come up with a personalize set of swim drills that you’ll
do to perfect your swim technique. Then watch the seconds slip off of your swim
time.
