Swim caps mandatory wear for most triathlons
Swim caps are required by most triathlon
management teams. It’s mostly to help identify you and locate you during the
swim event. It’s a lot harder to notice swimmers in the ocean with everything
else going on when you don’t have a swim cap on.
Doesn’t hurt to wear your cap during training either
Another thing we’ve done to keep triathlons safer is to move the swim event
to the first event instead of the last even of the competition. This way if
you’re cycling or running and you have to stop due to exhaustion, you just stop.
When you’re swimming and you have to stop due to a
leg cramp, it becomes much more of an issue.
It helps to wear your swim cap when you’re training as well. It will keep your
hair out of your face and it will keep the chorine out of your hair.
Latex caps are the cheapest but they wear out sooner than other materials. Lycra
caps won’t pull on your hair as much going on and off but it takes longer to dry
than other materials. You can get silicone caps which are longer lasting and are
supposed to be more drag efficient. Speedo and TYR both make silicone caps; you
can get them for about $9.
