Swim Cap Usually Mandatory
Your swim cap is mandatory wear during a triathlon mostly for safety and identification reasons. You will be much more visible it the water with your cap on. The race management team will supply you with one with your packet if
it is required to be worn.
While you train, you may also want to wear a cap when you swim. Caps will either be made of latex, lycra, silicone, or neoprene. Latex caps are the cheapest but they do not last as long as the other materials.
Lycra caps will go easy on your hair but take longer to dry. Silicone caps will last longer but they also cost more. Neoprene is the most expensive but an absolute must if you’re
swimming in cold water.
Wearing them during your training is really personal preference. If you have long hair and like to keep it out of your face, then you’re going to want to stuff you hair up into a cap. If your hair is sensitive to the chorine in the pool, wearing a cap will offer your hair some protection.
Supposedly the caps will improve your aerodynamics when you’re swimming. If you’re the kind that shaves to get that extra second, then you’ll probably want to wear a cap on your head, too. That or shave your head! Just kidding, okay?
