Swim event requires open-water training
Don’t limit all of your swimming practice in swimming pools. Because the swim
event of triathlons occurs out in the open water, successful triathletes must include open-water training in preparation. Why? To build confidence, learn how to stay straight when
swimming, and to build your strength.
Triathlon athletes benefit from getting out of the pool and into the ocean
If you’ve only swam in indoor pools up until now, you must schedule some open-water training before the day of your big
triathlon event. That’s because if you don’t try it, if you suddenly plop yourself into the ocean when the
tri contest starts, you’ll probably find you head playing mind-games with you. To your credit, swimming out in the big ocean can be scary. There are no decks nearby if a triathlete gets tired or needs a break.
Those swim lanes might have given triathlete swimmers more confidence in their abilities than they really have to move in a straight line.
Triathlete swimmers not used to swimming in the ocean realize that they’re all over the place and will waste their energy correcting the direction that they go. Don’t worry; there are techniques and tips to help with
swimming in triathlons. Correct gear can help your performance in water
sports too. Speedo and other manufacturers make great goggles, swimming caps and
wetsuits.
Finally, swimming in choppy water will take a whole lot more out of you than your community pool. It can be distracting at best and disorienting at worse if you haven’t exposed yourself to it before. Triathlons require 100% concentration from you; make sure you can give it.
