Sports Drinks Paramount for Endurance Athletes

Sports Drinks are a must for triathletes. More than any other nutrient, water is the single most important thing for you to consume during your both your Triathlon training and on your actual triathlon. Dehydration can kill you.

Some experts suggest that you use a technique called hyperhydration to keep you from getting behind on your water demands. Hyperhydration involves drinking about one to two cups about 30 minutes before you exercise or start your triathlon. Make sure that any prepackaged drinks you may consume don’t have more than 5% sugar. Drinking too much sugar with your drink will delay your body’s ability to empty your stomach.

Make sure that you don’t go over board and drink too much during your triathlon. If you do, you could suffer from water intoxication. That’s when your sodium level falls too low because you’re sweating and taking in too much water which dilutes the amount of sodium in your blood stream. This does weird stuff to you tissue, making your brain swell up against the skull. It can kill you.

The International Marathon Medical Directors’ Association suggests that you drink three cups of water an hour. That breaks down to one cup every 20 minutes or so. Other experts say drinking one cup of water every 15 minutes is necessary during a triathlon
