Can a sport bike work for you?

Can you use a sport bike successfully in your next Triathlon? Watch the swim to bike transition and you’ll see all kinds of bikes being used. If you race exclusively in triathlons, then you’ll probably want to buy a bike that is designed for triathlons. If you participate in other biking competitions, you may want to weigh the pros and cons of buying a bike that was designed for other purposes than just triathlons.

Sport bikes were designed as a compromise between the traditional touring bikes and bikes designed specifically for triathlons. They are usually cheaper than racing bikes. The main problem with sport bikes is that riders don’t find them that comfortable on longer rides. If you’re going to race in an Ironman or ultra length race, you’ll need to consider whether this is too long to be riding this kind of bike.

After you decide which cycle to get for your race, don’t think you’re finished! You need to decide if you’re going to go with stock handlebars or upgrade to a more aerodynamic design. After that, you’ve still got to work out a bike shoe and pedal combination that is the best for you and pick a good helmet. By selective purchasing, you can shave up to a minute on your time with just your bike gear.
