Olympics sports changing the way we run triathlons?
Olympics sports may be changing the way we run a Triathlon. How could that be? One word. Drafting. Drafting has always been a big no-no in triathlons. This is because triathlons are supposed to be an individual sport, while you’re competing against others; you’re not really supposed to be affecting them.
Drafting no longer a violation soon?
What is drafting? It’s that sweet but (in MHO) dangerous position we’ve all been in when we follow a tractor trailer too close on the highway. It can really save you some gas mileage. The same concept applies to participants in triathlons.
The ITU maintained the following rules at they apply to drafting:
* Riding within 5 meters of somebody’s back wheel is drafting and not allowed
* Riding next to somebody (closer than 2 meters) is drafting and not allowed
* Doing the same thing to car or other motor vehicle would also be not allowed
If an official caught any triathlete drafting, they could be disqualified from the race.
Why this is in the news now is because in the 2000
Summer Olympics, drafting was not grounds for disqualification for triathletes. What many triathletes are wondering now is how this will impact other certified Triathlons. It may be in the future that triathlons could even play out like a roller derby rink!
