New York marathon requires qualifying times
In order to compete in the New York marathon, runners must have qualifying times from a previous certified marathon.
Competing in the Big Apple is a dream for many runners. But that race won’t be their first because they must have run a marathon previous and with a good enough time to qualify.
Guaranteed entrance to those who qualify in running
Entrants enter a lottery to find out who gets to be
running in the NY marathon. Some runners are guaranteed entrance because they meet one of the following qualifications:
* They are members of the New York Road Runners (NYRR) since January 31, 2004 and they’ve finished a minimum of nine
NYRR-scored qualifying races
* They were entrants in the 2004 marathon race but had to cancel
* They’ve been in 15 or more marathons in New York City
* They’ve applied and lost out to the NY Marathon lottery in the last three years
* They’ve won overall or first place in an age group in a NYRR scored, qualifying race the previous year.
* They meet time standards set for marathons
Maybe because of its relative proximity, the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. is a popular pre qualifying run for the one in New York City. Many
triathlon athletes find this marathon a favorite to follow. Others find that
marathon training to be quite different from their tri training.
