Learning to swim all over again

If you want to be happy about your time in the swim event, consider learning to swim all over again. Triathlon training often forces us to focus on our technique.

Triathlon training requires focus on correct techniques

Instead of going with your intuition and blasting your way through water with speedy short strokes and power kicks, consider these tips instead:

• Learn how to be more efficient with your swim strokes. Focus on your stroke length to get you through the water faster.
• Shape your vessel. Become a fish. Make sure your horizontal and lateral alignments are as good as you can make them to reduce your drag.
• Learn to bilateral breathe as your train. Triathletes say that by learning how to breath bilaterally, they’ll able to keep a better eye on buoys that point them in the right direction. By keeping an eye on where you’re supposed to go, you’re able to reduce time and energy constantly moving yourself back on track.
• Minimize your kicking. All that thrashing around has less ROI (Return On Investment) than you’d think. Use your kick to keep yourself propelled in the right direction but other than that, use your arms to move you forward.
• Finally, you must train in open-water so you don’t get disoriented during your swimming event at the triathlon. Learn how the current feels, what it’s like to get in and out of the water fast, and how to swim in a straight line without swim lanes.
