Ironman Swimsuit can mean different things
Say Ironman swimsuit and a couple of different images may come up into your
head. The insoleman has a flotation swimsuit for children that they call their
Iron man swimsuit. Calendars with female triathletes sporting swimsuits (which I
doubt were the ones they wore during competition) might come to mind for others.
Most people familiar with triathlons, however, will think of triathletes in
their basic, no-frills suits.
For a triathlete, it’s something you can wear throughout your race
For many short triathlons, the triathlete plans
to keep his or her suit on during the whole race. For that matter, female
triathletes will be looking for bra support and male triathletes will be looking
at swim shorts that have a little bike padding contained therein. If you’re
going to race in a longer triathlon, like an Ironman, what you wear during your
swim split has less impact on your other events because you can probably make
the time to change into event specific apparel. More to pack, yes, but you’ll be
more comfortable in the long run.
Speedo’s Fast Skin II swimsuit looks more like a body suit than a swim suit.
Since the triathlon event first started in the Olympics in 2000, this suit has
been part of an ongoing controversy. Opponents worry that it gives competitors
wearing it an unfair advantage. Lab results show that it can reduce drag by up
to 4% for men and 3% for women. It might improve their efficiency, but so does
an aerodynamic bike helmet. Unless restrictions are set on what triathletes can
use, how is a swim suit any different from a fancy
helmet?
