Ironman Canada has a long history

While it doesn’t have a history as long as the one in Hawaii, the Ironman Canada Triathlon goes back to 1983. With 23 contestants, the Ironman race had triathletes swimming an out-and-back course and then riding their bikes on a course that included going around Skaha Lake two times, near Penticton, British Columbia.

A Triathlon is born

Back in the ‘80s, beer companies such as Miller Lite and Budweiser sponsored the race. By 1986, this Ironman joins Ironman New Zealand and Ironman Japan as qualifier events for the Ironman race in Hawaii. Triathletes received a little more motivation to win the event in 1990 when the winner would receive a prize of $50,000 (the first time in the event’s history there).

In the mid ‘90s, Timex was the official sponsor for the Ironman triathlons in Canada. Since 1997, Suburu has been the title sponsor.

In 2001 and 2002, record numbers of triathletes began their swim event at the same time in a single wave. In 2001, 1,985 triathletes started and in 2002, 2,032 triathletes started. Both events were fantastic!

To help triathletes figure out what to wear when they come to compete in the Ironman, the race management team has a website that provides all kinds of weather data for Penticton for when the race is scheduled to occur.
