Ironman synonymous with Triathlons for most people
The Ironman got its start in Hawaii in 1978. The first time the three event contest was held, only fifteen triathletes showed up to participate.
Triathlon is Holy Grail for endurance over-achievers
In 2004, over 20 races were hosted by the World
Triathlon Corporation (WTC). The International Union calls that length of
race an Ultra.
This type of race, which involves swimming for 2.4 miles, biking for 112 miles and then running for 26.2 miles is an endurance test where the triathletes push themselves to finish. In extraordinarily good shape, these triathletes are in training year round.
To enter a contest like this, you must finish in a qualifying race first. In 2005 there are over 20 pre-qualifying triathlons; many are shorter in length and held all over the world. Find a
triathlete group either locally or online to learn more about a training schedule and equipment you need to start out.
Depending on what kind of triathlons they compete in, triathletes train anywhere from five to 40 hours a week. For these iron men and iron women, competing in triathlons has become a lifestyle choice for them. You, too, can join the world of triathletes. Remember what one iron man or iron woman has done, you can too.
