Half Marathon Good Way to Test the Water
Good training will only take you so far. After that, there is no substitute
for experience. If you’re an experienced runner but you haven’t been in a long
run before, consider competing in a half marathon before your big event. Your
run in a shorter marathon will give you an idea of how your training is going
and lets you work out logistics that you can’t work out without being in a long
race (i.e. how much food or water will I really need, will I be comfortable with
these clothes, etc.) A big question that should be on every runner’s mind is
“how is my pacing?” Running in a shorter long-distance
race should let you test your pacing before you blow your big event.
Check on your Running Pace with a Half Marathon
Make sure you don’t run in any shorter marathons within 4 weeks of your main
event. This will keep you from fatiguing your body to a point where you might
not have enough time to recover. If your goal is just to finish the marathon (a
lofty accomplishment for most of us), expert coaches recommend that you not run
in any trial long races at all. That way you can run in the marathon with your
body in a refreshed state.
If you start early enough, competing in half marathons should give you multiple
opportunities to fine tune your race day operation as well as let you know if
you should tweak your run schedule. You can incorporate a qualifying run into
your training.
