Duathlon Can Open Possibilities for Triathletes
A Duathlon is a triathlon where the swim event has been taken out for the triathlete. They will participate in the run and bike events of the
Triathlon.
Many times duathlons are scheduled where there is no access to open water but triathletes still want to compete in more than one event. Duathlons can help athletes prepare for triathlons. Duathlons are also opportunities for athletes who are not comfortable swimming or for triathletes who can no longer swim.
What you’ll see is that the same courses for triathlons are used for duathlons at the same time (not literally, but during the triathlon weekend, for example). This will let athletes compete in the same course but not have to do the swim event. Many times with duathlons, what you will see is two run events sandwiching a bike event. That is triathletes will
run, then bike, and then run back to the starting point.
The latest development in duathlons has just been announced with the Aquabike. This multi-sport race will include two events: the swim event and the bike event. The idea behind this race was that prior triathletes or otherwise fit athletes who could no longer run because of sports injuries could still enjoy the challenges of an endurance race combining more than one sport. The Aquabike is a pilot project and has nine races scheduled so far for 2005, its first year in operation.
