Cycling Shorts or Tri-shorts?
What kind of cycling shorts you’re wearing can make all the difference when
you’re competing in your Triathlon. For Triathlons,
you need to consider what you’re wearing and how well is it going to support you
or protect you during the race. Many triathletes will wear bike shorts for the
longer bike events, to protect their bottoms from getting sore. You don’t want
to lose your focus on your race because all you can think about are your saddle
sores.
Test shorts out while you’re training.
But there are so many decisions! Should you go with a pair of shorts designed
for cyclists or should you compete in tri-shorts? What you go with depends to
some extent on how long your race is. If you’re competing in a shorter Olympic
length race, transition time matters and you probably want a one-type-fits-all
situations type of shorts, the tri-shorts. Tri-shorts are like bike shorts but
they usually have a little less padding and they’re made out a quick-dry fleece.
This lets athletes wear the same pair of shorts through all three events, saving
them transition time.
If you’re going to be in an Ironman, then your transition time may not impact
your final time as much and you’ll have the “luxury” to change into the outfit
which you’ll be most comfortable in for each event. My advice to you is to
simulate your race events before your main event. Make as part of your training,
transitioning from swim to cycling to running. See
