Cycle World Produces Triathletes
We often think of marathon runners when we think of endurance racers. But the fact is that from the cycle world we see cyclists also become world class triathletes. In the past there’s always been a bit of rift between runners and cyclists. But now there seems to be more and more “cross-pollination” between the two sports.
Just last year, USA Triathlon, American’s national organization committed to promoting triathlons in the United States, signed up the Cascade Bicycle Club out of Seattle Washington. The Cascade Bicycle Club is the largest bike club in America with over 5,000 members. What this shows is a growing interest of people in triathlons who traditionally thought of themselves as just cyclists.
This affiliation will benefit both cyclists and the runners. Cyclists will have mentors that can help them with their first triathlons and “roadies” can learn better cycling techniques, etiquette, and strategies.
A new development has put a twist on the old duathlon. Duathlons have traditionally been run/bike events, leaving out the swimming. A new program was just announced in January 2005. This program, called the Aquabike Series, will let athletes swim and bike, but not do the run part. Dean Peterson is credited with coming up with the idea. He got the idea from talking to a triathlons instructor who he hadn’t seen at events lately. The instructor explained that his knees kept him from running but that he would definitely compete in the other two events if he could.
