Hawaii Ironman Triathlon Ultimate Challenge for Athletes
Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. Those three words can mean a lot to triathletes all
over the world. Every year, triathletes compete in Ironmans all over in an
attempt to qualify for a spot in the Ironman held in Kona, Hawaii. In a lot of
ways, since the first Ironman was held in 1978, this Ironman hold a lot of
tradition that can’t be touched by other triathlons held around the world.
Prepare for swimming in the Hawaiian Ocean near Kona
An important aspect of preparing for a triathlon involves open water
swimming and getting to know the course before hand.
Whether you have a spot this year or you’re still working on getting qualified,
consider vacationing on the island of Hawaii so you can mix a little “R & R”
with your open water training off of Kailua pier.
The WTA has already scheduled the Ironman to be held in Hawaii all the way up to
2010. It is a traditional ultra triathlon that
begins with a 2.4 mile swim in the ocean, followed by a 112 mile bike race
around the island, and then finished with a 26.2 mile marathon. It’s interesting
that the 112 mile length of the bike race was determined back in 1978 because it
happened to be a “round the island” bike race that was already going on. I bet
you there are iron men and woman out there wondering what the race would be like
if Navy Commander John Collins had been stationed in the state of Texas instead!
